I found this guidance and shared it with y’all here a few years ago. Thanks be to God, we have many new parishioners since then, and others coming back after being away, so I’ll take this opportunity to re-post as a friendly reminder. I’ll also add that parents with young children in tow are warmly invited to skip to the front of the confession line.
To the parents of young children: May we suggest...RELAX! Know of God's love for your family. He appreciates your presence here. All people, especially children, are welcome. Some advice:
1. Sit toward the front where it is easier for your little ones to see and hear what is going on at the altar. They tire of seeing the backs of others!
2. Reverence in the church is important, so if you have to leave Mass with your child who is being loud, feel free to do so, by going to the narthex or cry room and holding them, but please come back. As Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me.”
3. Engage them. Quietly explain the parts of the Mass and the actions of the ministers. If needed, you can bring a soft, quiet toy, plush, or book (preferably religiously themed).
4. Your job is to sing the hymns, participate in the liturgy, and pray! Children learn about worship and liturgical behavior by copying you. Participate as much as you can, you're doing great!
5. Remember that some days are harder than others. That's ok, just keep on coming, your efforts and God's grace will pay off eventually.
To those without young children: Remember the way we welcome families and children in the church directly affects the way they respond to the church and to God. Do not be a stumbling block to them. Let them know that they are at home in His house of worship. They have a right to be here. The presence of children is a gift to the church and a reminder that our parish is growing. Please welcome our children and give an encouraging smile to their parents. If you need to move to stay focused during Mass, that's ok, just do so quietly And please feel free to lend a hand if you think a parent needs one, just ask them first.
We are ONE body.
Don’t forget to sign up to participate in our 70th anniversary Parish Directory. There is no cost to participate, and those who sit for a photo will receive a free copy of the directory when it is published. Our directory won’t be complete without you!
